Mixing vs Mastering
Mixing and mastering happen at different stages of finishing a song, and they answer very different questions.
- Mixing = balancing all the individual tracks: vocals, drums, bass, synths, FX.
- You shape volume, panning, EQ, compression, reverb — across many tracks.
- Mastering = polishing the final stereo file once the mix is done.
- It makes the finished mix loud, consistent and ready for streaming or release.
- If mixing is cooking the meal, mastering is plating it before it leaves the kitchen.
